J.C. Wheeler Public Library in downtown Martin is seeking a library director “who will be a committed partner in helping to ensure the library remains a community staple for all.
“The new director will be integral to strengthening the library’s connection to the community through library services and programs.”
Current Library Director Alicia Kershaw apparently is stepping down after almost 16 years of service.
The position, which includes 32 hours a week, is under the direction of the Library Board and the director oversees and directs all daily operations, and develops and implements long-term plans. He or she supervises all library personnel and oversees the development of the library collection, special programs and events.
The goal is to ensure an exceptional library experience by greeting, assisting, instructing, and promoting library services to patrons in a positive and pleasant manner.
The director must assist at the circulation desk and is responsible for hiring, scheduling, evaluating, promoting, discipline and termination of employment of staff.
Other duties include overseeing and evaluating all library programs and outreach services, preparing annual budget requests and ensuring effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time.
Maintenance of the library’s network and OPAC software also is part of the job.
The library director must have at least a high school diploma, Level 4 certification from the Library of Michigan, which is required within one year of employment for state aid purposes. Previous experience working in a public library setting, including administrative and supervisory responsibilities, is a plus, along with ability to work a varied schedule, including nights and weekends
