Veteran Wayland City Planning Commission Chairman J.D.Gonzales was chosen for yet another term Tuesday night.
Andrew Shelest, who chaired the April meeting in the absence of Anne Tatreaux and Gonzales, was selected as vice chair and Megan Mickelson was named secretary.
The commission also met to decide whether or not to recommend a six-year capital improvements plan to the City Council later this month. The commission voted 6-0 with Mark Lyons absent to do just that, but there were questions directed to City Manager Erik Wilson.
The city manager said the plan is not a budget, but instead is, “just a wish list of what we want to get done,” for the years 2025 to 2031.
Wilson acknowledged, There’s a lot that needs to be done on our roads,” but there also is plenty in the categories of utilities, infrastructure, vehicles and equipment projects.
Gonzales expressed concern about the city 2025-26 budget projecting expenses exceeding revenue by about $106,000.
“We shouldn’t be overspending if we have a huge bill coming in a couple of years,” he said.
Wilson noted that soon Lift Station No. 1 will need extensive repair and it’s possible tougher economics times may be ahead. Cost estimates are pegged at $11.8 million.
The commission also discussed the high priority of a dog park, for which $50,000 will be set aside, but nobody yet knows where the location will be.
Wilson told commissioners, “”none of the expenses are on the credit card. We have a healthy fund balance.”
