Jijak Foundation fall harvest festival, corn dance, is Oct. 24

The Gun Lake Tribe of Potawatomis is inviting the public to the fall festival and corn dance from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Jijak Foundation site in Hopkins Township.

Jijak Director Kevin Finney said the day will include feasting and working with the fall harvest of traditional foods.

“This full day will event will feature activities for all ages, including crafts, hands-on cooking and food processing workshops,” Finney said. “The event is open to everyone and free to attend.”

The schedule for the day’s events features:

  • Native American Farm and Foods Market.
  • Outdoor oven cooking with Gary Morseau Sr.
  • Making and Using Botagen (corn mortar) with Buddy Rayfield.
  • A Corn Husking Bee/Corn Braiding.
  • Traditional Duck Roasting with Daisy Kostus.
  • The Bode`wadmi Corn Dance with John Bush.
  • Old-Time Processing of Tobacco with Charles Barker.
  • “Corn Husk Dolls.”
  • Damnabo (Corn Soup) with George Martin.
  • Lunch and Dinner Feast Prepared by Carly Shananaquet.
