Hopkins Board of Education Secretary John VanBonn will resign his position at the end of June and Hopkins Public Schools is seeking applications for the upcoming vacancy.
The individual will be appointed to fill the vacant position until Dec. 31, 2024, filling out the remainder of VanBonn’s four-year term. He or she will be eligible afterward for election.
VanBonn is stepping down to avoid any appearance of impropriety because the newly chosen superintendent starting July 1 is his son, Scott VanBonn. Hopkins school officials said the elder VanBonn recused himself from voting in the process of hiring the new superintendent to succeed Gary Wood.
Those interested in filling the vacancy must meet the legal requirements to be a member of the Board of Education. They must be at least 18 years of age; a citizen of the United States; a resident of the State of Michigan and a resident of the Hopkins Public Schools district; a registered voter in the school district.
Interested citizens should send a letter expressing their interest to Mrs. Karen Ryan, President, Board of Education, Hopkins Public Schools, 400 Clark Street, Hopkins, MI 49328. This letter must be received in the superintendent’s office no later than 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 10.
