Marian photo_20160602_wm0069190_0_20160602Elva Gillett, 100,died June 1 just three days after her husband of 77 years, Walter. They both were former teachers in the Wayland school system.
She was born to Rev. Willis E and Beulah Boulden Hogg Oct 2, 1915, in Pennsylvania. She graduated from Geneseo, (Ill.) High school in 1934 and Western Michigan Teachers College in 1940. She met Walter Avery Gillett Jr. at Western. They were married March 17, 1939, by her father in Centreville, Mich.
She was an art teacher and taught school at both Wayland and Ann Arbor. Together they had four children: Carolyn Hura of Kalamazoo, Mi., Martha (John) Doyle of Lakeland, Fl. Avis (George) West of Houghton, Mi. and David Gillett of Ca. They had 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.
They retired to California in 1975 where she enjoyed playing bridge, photography and her art. Beside her husband she was preceded in death by an infant son, 4 sisters, Mary Bradley, Ruth Pacheco, Hazel Mothershead and Beulah (BJ) Hogg, son-in-law Walter Hura and granddaughter Wendy Jesse.
A joint funeral service will be at the Shelbyville Methodist Church Tuesday, June 7.
Memorials may be made to the Church or SW Michigan Hospice.
