The Wayland City Council Monday night made it official for Jon Timmers to take over as new fire chief.
Timmers has been serving as interim chief since Jim Stoddard suffered a heart attack and took leave last May. Stoddard sent a letter to the City Coun cil in September, giving notice he didn’t believe he could continue as chief.
Timmers, who has been serving on the department since 2013, was sworn into the past officially at the council meeting (see photo above).
City Manager Erik Wilson said of Timmers, “He’s done a phenomenal job and I propose we drop the interim tag.”
In other business Monday, the City Council:
- Was given the annual audit from Dan Veldhuis of Siegried Crandall. He noted two errors, but complimented Treasurer Kate Balfour, who stepped into the job last summer after her predecessor, Cherie Parish, was fired. Mayor Jennifer Antel told Balfour, “You weren’t perfect, but you were darn close.”
It was noted that the city has a fund balance of $2.7 million and Antel said she remembers no so long ago when that figure was only $27,000.
• Was told by Wilson that Surf Internet plans to make a presentation about the possibility of doing business in the city.
- Agreed to replace two pumps at the water lift station because they are putting out at only about half the necessary efficiency.
