July 26 is deadline for filing for school board posts

AAESA2Both the Wayland and Hopkins Boards of Education will have four seats up for election in the November general this year and Martin has two, and 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, is the deadline for anyone interested in filing.

Meanwhile, Allegan Area Educational Service Agency will offer an informational workshop at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at the AAESA, 310 Thomas St. in Allegan.

This free workshop is designed to prepare prospective candidates on the realities of serving their communities on a school board prior to filing a petition.

Topics of discussion will include:

  • Election law-dos and don’ts
  • Timelines for filing
  • Requirements of serving
  • Roles and responsibilities of board members
  • Brief overview of school finance
  • Michigan Association of School Boards and other avenues for useful information.

Interested candidates must file at the Allegan County Clerk’s office (113 Chestnut St., Allegan, (269) 673-0291). The election will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

The seats of Wayland incumbents Gary Wood, Tom Salingue, Theresa Dobry and Nancy Thelen will expire at the end of this year. All terms are for four years, from 2017 to 2021.

In Hopkins, the seats open now are held by Jeff Gilder, Brian McLaughlin, Karen Ryan and John Myers.

The expiring seats in Martin are held by Tom McLaughlin and Rosemary Andrews.
