Kalamazoo Hackett defeated Martin Tuesday evening 53-29 to lift its season record to 5-2 and lower Martin’s to 2-5.

Martin trailed 11-4 in the first quarter, but consecutive baskets by Anna and Avery Jager in the last minutes resulted in a 13-13 tie.

Things got even better early in the second period when Torry Harris came up with a three-point play to put her teammates up by one. 16-15, but it was all Hackett after that. The Irish scored 13 unanswered points in the second quarter to mount a 28-16 advantage at the half.

Things went from bad to worse in the second half, as Hackett’s leads continued to be in double digits the rest of the way.

The Lady Clippers had a difficult time bring the ball over the time line against the Irish’s relentless full-court press and they couldn’t cope with the inside play of Hackett’s inside people.

Coach Ben Schipper said, “Our defensive goal was to contain their freshman post (#34). She came out and had 10 of her game-high 23 points in the first quarter, but I thought we battled her well after that. I was proud of our effort throughout the whole game.

“Their press and size just wore us down quarter by quarter. We lost our starting point guard, Alley Bacon, in the second quarter to an injury. With Hackett pressing us pretty much the whole game, losing a ball handler definitely made things more difficult.”

Anna Jager led Martin with nine points.

It was almost like deja vue all over again.

Martin only won one ballgame a year ago, and it was over the Indians. This time, it was a much more defensive struggle.

The Clipper boys improved their overall season record to 3-6 with the triumph.
