The Martin girls’ basketball team Thursday evening suffered a heartbreaking 48-46 loss to Tri-Unity Christian in a non-league encounter.
The loss in double overtime sank the Lady Clippers’ overall season to 4-10 while Tri-Unity now is 8-4.
Tri-Unity led throughout the first three quarters, but the game was close pretty mch all the way. Martin battled from behind to pull to within a point at the emnd of three periods and the regulation score was 31-31. After the first extra session it was 38-38.
Coach Ben Schipper said, “Tonight was a heartbreaker after an incredibly hard fought battle. This is the fifth one possession or OT game we have lost this year. It’s a tough pill to swallow that they keep not going our way, but we played very well overall tonight and we’re proud of the great effort.”
Tri-Unity buried eight threes and scored all 12 of its points in the first quarter on four threes.
“We made some adjustments and played much better defense the rest of the way,” Schipper said. “I’m extremely proud of Avery Jager. She played all but about one minute of the game. There was a lid on the basket for her for three quarters scoring zero points on many good looks. She stayed with it and we trusted her to keep going to her in pressure filled moments and she scored all 11 of her points in the fourth quarter and the overtimes.”
Anna Jager stepped up by taking the reins as point guard and putting a lot of pressure on the defense.
“Our whole team gave their all and each individual contributed positively to the game tonight,” the coach added. “We were so happy that we were the aggressors tonight getting paint touches and forcing fouls.”
Anna Jager scoired eight points and had six rebounds. Marybeth Ritchie had eight points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots. Torryn Harris chipped in seven points and seven rebounds and Kayden Jager had seven point and Alley Bacon five.
