Regional 400 champ Evangelina Helderop

The Hopkins girls took fourth place with 57 points in the regional track meet at Sturgis Friday. The Viking boys were seventh with 42 points.

Otsego won both the boys’ and girls’ regional championships.

First-year Lady Viking junior Evangelina Helderop captured the individual regional crown in the open 400-meter run with a time of 61.09 seconds. She was second in the open 200-meter dash at 27.39 seconds after taking first in the preliminaries.

Savannah Emaus, who seemed to get the hang of the pole vault in the last several weeks, turned her efforts into a regional championship by clearing 10-3. She was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 15-2.5.

Senior Emma Helder took fourth place in the 800-meter with a season-best time of 2:27.06.

Senior Jasmine Fisher closed out her long distance career with a season best performance of 5:38.02, good for eighth place. She was ninth in the 3200 and teammate Alyssa Beilby was 10th.

Junior Olivia Barry was able to sneak into eighth in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 17.66 seconds.

Helder, Finney, Lauren Brown and Helderop hooked up for a fifth-place finish in the 1600-meter relay, 4:26.39. The 800-meter relay team was sixth, featuring Alex Jackson, Cassidy Finney, Emaus and Helderop. The 3200 relay quartet of Fisher, Beilby, Mary Wells and Helder was eighth in 10:43.74.

Senior Shannon Henshaw, who has been successful in the throws all season, was fourth in the shot put at 31-0 and freshman Grace Brenner was right behind her in fifth at 30-06.

Junior Trey Collins was regional champion in the pole vault, clearing 12-10, and freshman teammate Logan Klinge finished second at 12-4.

Collins also continued his solid work in the high jump, taking the runner-up slot with a leap of 6-0. Junior Dylan Perry broke into the scoring column by finishing in a tie for fifth with a career-best leap of 5-7.

Todd Henley

Junior Todd Henley broke the 10-minute barrier for the first time, checking in at 9:51, good for fifth place in the 3200-meter run. Alex Comerford of Otsego was regional champion in both the 1600 and 3200 (9:25.7).

Freshman Logan Klinge was sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles, in 16.74 seconds.

Hopkins 3200 relay seventh in 8:50.34, with Nolan Hugmeyer, Todd Henley, Zach Nutter and Dan Rausch.

Sophomore Trevor Long fifth in the shot put with a throw of 42-01.5.
