A powerful Pewamo-Westphalia girls’ track team captured the Division 3 regional championship Friday at Kent City and Hopkins placed fourth.
The champions amassed 179 points in the meet, Grand Rapids West Catholic had 103, Grandville Calvin Christian 74 and Hopkins 67.
The Lady Vikings were just coming off winning their fourth straight O-K Silver Conference championship and were unbeaten in league dual meets.
Senior Kennedy Miedema crossed the finish line first for Hopkins in the 300-meter hurdles, recording a time of 48.93 seconds. No other hurdler broke 50 seconds.
Julia Forbes won the long jump with a leap of 16-4.75.
They were as regional champions by the 800-meter relay team of Ellen Bregg, Josie Freybler, Miedema and Nicole Pavlak with a time of 1:49.25, just 11-hundreths of a second faster than Pewamo-Westphalia’s entry.
Pewamo Westphalia, however, took the top spot in the 1600-meter relay, five seconds faster than the Vikings’ quartet of Julia Forbes, Miedema, Freybler and Pavlak in 4:14.37.
The 3200 relay team with Miedema, Megan Heft, Freybler and Rachael Weber took third in 10:11.27.
Weber was fifth in both the open 800 and 1600.
