The Hopkins girls’ varsity bowling team and individual boys’ bowler terry Thomas will be at the M-66 Lanes in Battle Creek Friday and Saturday to compete in the state Division 3 championship.

Meanwhile, Wayland junior Sydney Urben will be at Canton Bowl on the east side of the state vying for the individual state championship in Division 2. Urben was state runner-up in the tournament last year and was runner-up in the regional competition last Saturday.

The Lady Viking rollers qualified for the state meet by taking third place in the regionals at Eastland Bowl in Kalamazoo Feb. 25. Bettle Creek Pennfield won the regional crown by knocking down 3,236 pins, Portand was second with 3,157 and Hopkins third with 3,006. They were the only three teams to register scores of above 3,000 in the tournament. Otsego came close with 2,992.

Hopkins came though with a 731, 719 and 732 games in the individual matches and somehow overcame a horrible fifth baker game of only 89.

Thomas piled up 1,143 pins to take the 10th and last qualifying spot for individuals, edging out teammate sophomore Brenden Gossman by 14 pins.
