The Hopkins girls’ varsity cross-country team just missed a trip to the state championship meet Saturday by finishing in fourth place in the Division 2 regionals at the Red Bud Moto Cross Park in Buchanan.

However, Viking junior Jasmine Fisher and sophomore Todd Henley from the boys’ squad qualified individually for the big dance next Saturday at Michigan International Speedway near Brooklyn.

The Lady Vikings scored 152 points, one ahead of fifth-place Zeeland East. Holland Christian won the team competition with 75 points, followed by Zeeland West and South Haven.

In the boy’s meet, Hopkins finished 10th among 14 teams with 224 points. Zeeland West was regional champion with 53 points, Zeeland East had 59 and Allegan 157.

Fisher placed 12th individually with a 5,000-meter time of 20:33.1. Laura Velerman checked in 20th at 21:30.9, Emma Helder was 32nd, Alyssa Bielby 34th and Gracie DeZeeuw 54th.

Henley captured seventh place in 17:18.6 to stake his claim to go to state. Dan Rausch was 26th in 18:34.2, Jake Pastoor was 46th, Joe Ludlam 91st and Christopher Tortorelli 92nd.
