TViking Logo2he Hopkins girls’ varsity basketball team gave perennial power Grand Rapids West Catholic a tussle Friday evening in its season opener before losing 56-49.

The Lady Vikings fell behind 14-9 in the first quarter and were down 21-17 at intermission, but picked up the offense in the second half, pulling even at 34-all to start the fourth period. The Falcons put together a 22-15 run in the final eight minutes to claim the victory.

Freshman guard Teeny Phelan pumped in 26 points on three three-point field goals for West Catholic.

Junior center Meghan Schulz dropped in 11 points to lead Hopkins, Mikayla Bulich added 10 and Maddie Krcatovich nine. All of Krcatovich’s points came on three, three-point field goals.

The contest was marred by a whopping 53 fouls called, 29 on West Catholic and 24 on Hopkins.
