The Hopkins varsity softball team split a doubleheader Monday with Belding, bringing its overall season record to 5-2.
The Lady Vikings now are 1-2 in O-K Silver Conference play after losing a nine-inning heartbreaker to defending state Division III runner-up Calvin Christian.
Hailey Burch threw four innings in the opener, giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out two. The Lady Vikings prevailed in that one by a 13-5 count, sparked by a six-run fourth inning rally.
Kelsey Dusseau threw three innings in relief, gave up 2 hits, 1K, 0BBs, and 2 runs
Dusseau clubbed a triple, two runs batted in and scored two runs. Morgan Fifelski had a triple with an RBI.
Burch threw four and a third innings in the nightcap, won by Belding 5-1. She gave up five hits, three runs and struck out two.
Dusseau threw 3 2/3 innings, gave up two hits, walked one and fanned one.
Dusseau had a double and Kylan Winchester a triple, but coach Casey Schoenborn explained, “We couldn’t string anything together.”
