The Hopkins girls’ varsity basketball team will have a showdown Monday at NorthPointe Christian to decide whether or not it will repeat as O-K Silver Conference champion.

The Lady Vikings will take a 6-1 league record, 9-5 overall, against a team that is unbeaten this year in the Silver. The game will be a makeup of a contest that was postponed earlier this season because of inclement weather.

Hopkins claimed its ninth win of the campaign Friday night in a 60-46 non-conference matchup at Grand River Prep. Senior point guard Kennedy Helderop scored 17 points and younger sister Evangeline dropped in a dozen to pace the offensive attack.

Meanwhile, the Hopkins boys cruised to an 86-34 victory over Wyoming Lee to lift its season record to 12-4 and 7-2 in the league.

Hopkins had five players score in double figures, led by Hunter Lewellyn (20), Nolan Smith (14), Tyler Zomerlei (13), Colin Weber (12), and Drew Weber (10).

“It was senior night for us, and our four seniors, Nolan Smith, Hunter Lewellyn, Bryce Smith and Blaine Hunt, played the majority of the minutes to lead us in the win,” said coach Jake Jewett. “All of the underclassmen gave it their all when in the game for those four guys who have given so much to our program.

“I love how we’re playing right now as a team and playing for each other. We’ve talked all year about how we need to be playing our best basketball come the end of February and into March, and we’re still building toward that.
The Vikings play Monday at home vs. NorthPointe Christian and then turn around to play them again Thursday at their place. The two teams now are tied for second place in the Silver.
