The Hopkins girls’ varsity softball team opened the season with a band by sweeping Fennville Monday afternoon 19-0 and 23-1 in a doubleheader.

Haley Burch threw all four innings in the first game, striking out three and yielding two walks and a single.

On the offensive side, Lexi Merren had three hits, including one homer and six runs batted in, Hannah VanDeRoovart had four hits, one double, and one triple, with two RBIs, Kristi Lenard had a double with four RBIs Pals had a double, and Caitlin Rodenheisler had a double.

In the nightcap, Kelsey Dusseau threw all three innings and gave up two hits and had three Ks, hit a batter and walked one.

Kyra Winchester had two singles and a triple, Courtney Dusseau had a home run, a triple, and a single with four RBIs, Merren had a double and two singles with two RBIs, VanDeRoovart had a home run, a double, and two singles, and scored four times, and Lenard had a home run and three singles with three RBIs.

Coach Casey Schoenborn’s group is scheduled to play Wednesday afternoon against Otsego before taking spring break until April 10.
