It’s official. The Hopkins girls’ track team captured its seventh straight O-K Silver Conference championship by taking first in a weather-delayed league meet.

The meet was delayed for about one hour Monday by thunder and lightning. the competition was concluded at Wyoming Kelloggsville High School Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Vikings finished with 133 points, 21 more than runner-up Calvin Christian, Wyoming Godwin Heights was third and Belding fourth. Belding and Hopkins shared the league title a year ago.

Kelloggsville earned the boys’ championship and he Hopkins were are in sixth place with 51 points.

Lady Vikings who were crowned Silver champions Monday were:

• Junior Emma Helder in the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:26.03.
• Senior Meghan Schulz was a double winner, taking the shot put at 36-04.5 and the discus at 108-08. Teammate Shannon Henshaw came through with a third in both throwing events.
• Junior Savannah Emaus leaped 16-04.25 to take first in the long jump.

What really made the difference, however was a boatload of second-place finishes:

• Emaus was runner-up in the pole vault with her personal best 8-05.
• The 800 relay quartet of Brittney Houseman, Emaus, Anna Washburn and Laura Velderman.
• Houseman twice in the sprints, the 100 and 200.
• Junior Jasmine Fisher was second in the 3200-meter run.

Capturing thirds were:

• The 400 relay team of Houseman, Emaus, Washburn and Velderman, the 1600 relay with Lauren Brown, Cassidy Finney, Gracie DeZeeum and Emma Helder, Schulz in the high jump and Velderman in the 400.

The big story of the night for the Vikings boys was sophomore Trey Collins clearing 12-0 take first in the pole vault by a foot and a half. Obviously, it was his personal best performance.

Collins added a third in the long jump at 19-10.5.

Todd Henley also was a bright spot for the Hopkins boys. He finished second in the open 3200 at 10:25.72, was third in the 1600 and ran a leg with fourth-place 3200 relay with Dan Rausch, Jacob Pastoor and Zach Nutter.

Rausch finished third in the 400, as did Nathan Roberts in the discus at 126-01. Collins settled for fifth in the high jump.
