The Hopkins varsity volleyball team opened its season on solid footing by taking runner-up honors Saturday at the Lawton Invitational.

Hopkins defeated Fennville 21-16, 21-9; split with Comstock 20-21, 21-14 Hopkins defeated Lawton 21-8, 21-12 and Berrien Springs 21-13, 21-12 in pool play.

The Vikings then beat Bridgman 21-12, 21-15 and Saugatuck 21-12, 22-20 in the Gold Bracket round.

They finished the day with a record of 5-0-1 and now are 7-2-1 overall for the season.

Statistically, Logan Brummel had 82 assists; Meghan Schulz 35 kills and Logan Brummel added 24, Macy Arndt 21 and Brianna Miller 20; Schulz had 6 blocks and Mikayla Bulich 4; Brummel served up 13 aces and Brianna Miller 6, and Hailey Shank 43 came up with 43 digs, Bulich had 31, Brummel 24 and Miller 20

The Vikings went 2-2 Friday in the Comstock Invitational, defeating Grand Rapids Union and Montague, but losing twice to Comstock Park.
