Julia ForbesMaggie WhitneyThe Hopkins girls’ varsity track team captured its fourth meet championship this spring Monday by winning the Comstock Invitation Monday.

The Lady Vikings, most recently rated seventh in the state in the power ratings by the Michigan High School Track Coaches Association (MITCA), now have won the Watervliet Relays, the Hopkins Invitational and the O-K Silver Conference meet as well.

Wayland was among the 11 girls’ track squads in the competition and placed fifth with 63 points. Hopkins won it with 179 points, well ahead of runner-up Three Rivers.

Enjoying first-place finishes for the Lady Vikings were:

  • The 4×800 relay with Emma Helder, Madison Snoeyink, Josie Freybler and Jasmine Fisher.
  • The 4×200 relay, Julia Forbes, Josie Freybler, Laura Velderman and Brittney Houseman.
  • Julia Forbes, both the 200-meter dash and the long jump.
  • Laura Velderman, 400-meter run.
  • Bailey Ballard, discus.
  • Meghan Schulz, shot put.

Lauryn Spencer2?The Lady Wildcats had two individual champions on the day. Sophomore Maggie Whitney won the 800 with a time of 2:30.14 and junior Lauryn Spencer took first in the 100 hurdles in a time of 17.72 seconds.

Whitney also was third in the 1600-meter run. The 3200 relay team of Hayley Bilger, Zoe Antel, Mickayla Kohtz and Whitney took third in 10:47.56. The 800 meter relay of Bilger, Ludwig, Spencer, and Santos finished fourth in 2:00.89. The team of Whitney, Antel, Rybiski and Bilger ran a time of 4:39.39 to take third in the 1600 relay.
