Samantha Sebright scored 11 points for the Lady Vikings.

The Hopkins girls’ basketball team had to hang on for dear life at Wyoming Godwin Heights Tuesday to score a 61-58 victory.

The Lady Vikings took an early lead and were up 12 at halftime. Midway through the third quarter they pushed their lead to 17.

However, Godwin got hot from the floor and capitalized on some Viking turnovers cutting the gap to eight at the end of the third period. The Lady Wolverines continued their burst, and tied the game at 50 before taking command of a five-point lead into the closing minutes.

The Vikings were able to get some results out of their press to get the lead back 56 to 55. Godwin scored once more before Hopkin was able to close out the scoring on a5-0 run to seal the victory.

“Both teams gave an all-out effort in an exciting high school basketball game,” coach John Robinson said, happily noting eight of his players broke into the scoring column.

Senior point guard Kennedy Helderop tossed in 18 points to lead Hopkins, as usual. Samantha Sebright added 11 points, Olivia Sebright had 10 and Alley Lenard nine.

The Vikings are back in action Wednesday night at home against Kelloggsville.
