Lady Wildcat bowlers shocked by Catholic Central

Kadence Bottrall and Bella Harnish

Wayland boys’ varsity bowling coach Sherry Miklusicak called it “a night of “shock and awe!”

The shock was that the Lady Wildcat bowlers lost 16-14 to Grand Rapids Catholic Central. The awe was that the youthful and inexperienced boys’ group gave GRCC a solid battle before losing 18-12.

Miklusicak said, “They (Wildcat girls) just got themselves in a hole too deep to dig out of. They didn’t give up and made it close.”

Taking points for the Lady Wildcats were Kadence Bottrall, who took both her points with games of 213 and 220, Bella Harnish with a high game of 221 and Haley Taylor with a 149 game.

Another good game was had by Lillian Gates 158.

“Breanna Hyde, Josie Melinn and Sarisa Cawley are doing well as new bowlers this year with only one week of practice to get ready for this season due to all the Covid restrictions,” Miklusicak added.

The coach acknowledged she was hoping her boys wouldn’t get blown out because she had seen Catholic Central’s scores from week one.

“Awe is about how amazing our boys are coming together. Awe is about how smooth anchor Mark Musgrave III was tonight. I suspect a little Frank Rybiski (her father and mentor) must have been with him tonight. For those of you how didn’t know my dad, he was known as ‘Mr. Smooth’.”

Sophomore Chandler Caruso led in Baker games and is starting to roll his ball very well, she said. His first two balls were strikes and finished marking in three of four frames.

Junior Deven Gardner marked in all four of his frames. Senior Alan Beggs went three for four in Bakers as well. The Wildcats took the first game with a great 195 game to shock Catholic Central and were up 4-0. Then in game two they suffered a low game.

“Musgrave rocked the pocket all night, but just kept getting tapped,” Miklusicak said. “You name it and he left it. The rotten ten pin, a solid eight pin and a pocket 7-10 split.

“What I am really proud of is his maturity he has grown into. He didn’t let it rattle him! He consistently threw one great ball after another. I am pretty sure he didn’t miss the head pin at all.”

Senior Max Oosterhouse turned in two strong games and sophomore Steven Harnish came in and consistenly hit the head pin.

Taking individual points were Deven Gardner, Stephen Harnish, Max Oosterhouse, and Mark Musgrave III 201.

Wayland also took total pins in game two, which added four more points to its total.
