Wayland girls remained undefeated in O-K Gold Conference bowling dual matches and for the season Monday by beating Cedar Springs 23-7. The boys’ squad started fast, but then burned out down the stretch, losing 18-12.

The Lady Wildcats got off to a rocky start, losing the first Baker game 120-102 and then bounced back taking game two 138-117. This was enough to take total Baker games as well.

Individual points in match one Breanna Hyde 170, Bella Harnish 194, and Kadence Bottrall 165 and the ‘Cats took total pins as well to go up 13-6.

Coach Eric Bottrall said of Hyde, “Boy, this girl is really coming on as a dominant player in the O-K Gold.”

Match two found Wayland’s Italian sorella (sister – Carola Basso) taking her point with a 132 game, Breanna Hyde 143, Isabella Harnish 247 (even beats the boys!) and Kadence Bottrall 179. Obviously, they took total pins as well.

Wayland girls now own a 7-0 dual match record overall and are 5-0 in league contests.

The Wildcat boys jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in Baker games, but couldn’t quite hang on to it and only took two of the remaining 18 points to absorb their first league loss of the season.

“We were bowling on the new phantom pattern which will typically keep scores lower than a house shot,” said coach Sherry Mikliusicak

In Baker game one, it was Wayland 136 to Cedar Springs 116. Baker Game two – Wayland 149 to Cedar Springs 138 (their anchor bowler threw a pocket 7-10 split).

“Our number two and four spots struggled today in Baker games, but we still came away with wins,” Miklusicak said.

Mark Musgrave rolled a 163 in the first match game, but lost his point by 22 pins. Deven Gardner rolled a 149 and lost his point by 11 pins, and Stephen Harnish scored the Wildcats’ lone point with a nice 186 game, taking his point by 30 pins.

In game two, Mark Musgrave took the lone point with a 175 (34 pins over his opponent). Deven Gardner had a 169, but unfortunately his opponent had a 190. Carson Beck rolled a 163 and lost by just seven pins. Even closer was Ashton Kasprowicz with a 150, losing by just two pins.

“Our games were fairly close and we put up a good fight, losing total by 135 pins over 10 games,” the coach said. “That is just one extra spare or strike a game and we are improving drastically and we are going to beat them when they come to our home lanes!”

In JV action this afternoon, high scores were by Juan Rodriguez and Ayden Toliver. Both men are looking good. Younger guys, Carter Decker, Charles Caruso, Dominik Baker, Dylan Senn, Jayse Henkel and Wil Dewing are working hard and improving every day.

Wayland will be challenged by a tough Thornapple-Kellogg Wednesday at the Rock ‘n Bowl Lanes.
