A trip to the state Class BWHS girls golf golf tournament may be like just another day at the office for senior all-stater Ali Martus, but this time she’s going to the big dance with all of her teammates.

Martus and the Wayland varsity qualified for the state championship match a week from Saturday by capturing third place in the regional meet Thursday. They’ll be in action Oct. 17 at the Forest Akers Golf Course on the campus of Michigan State University.

The Wildcats carded a team score of 386, taking third behind Grand Rapids South Christian’s 359 and Holland Christian’s 360. The Sailor’s regional title was the second this week for the O-K Gold Conference, as Hastings won its regional Wednesday. The Wildcats finished third behind both regional champs in the final league standings.

Martus shot an 82 for 18 holes to pace the Lady Wildcats and earn her fourth trip in four years to the state tournament. She came away last year with all-state honors.

Alexis Kirschbaum checked in with a 94 and Hunter Fenton, who has been coming on strong of late, carded a 97. Marisa Schild came in with a 113 and Lauren Drew a 114.

The trip to the state finals is the first for Wayland in the past six years.
