The Wayland High School girls’ golf team qualified for the Division 3 state meet by taking third in the regionals at Quail Ridge Golf Club in Ada.

South Christian was regional champion with a team score of 368, Grand Rapids Christian was runner-up with a 403 and the Lady Wildcats carded a 433, two strokes better than Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

Junior Lauren Drew had the best individual score for the Lady ‘Cats with an 18-hole score of 101. Chloe Coughlin was a stroke behind at 102, Abby Omness had a 112,, Grace Dollarhide 118 and Marisa Schild a 120.

The scores were higher than usual because of the rainy and windy weather that prevailed on the course.

South Christian’s Natalie Samdal was individual regional champion with a remarkable 87 and Linnea Hartz of Allendale was runner-up with a 90.

Wayland two years ago also qualified for the state meet, riding the excellence of all-stater Ali Martus.

This year’s Division 3 state finals will be held Oct. 20-21 at the Forest Akers Course West Course on the campus of Michigan State University.
