The Wayland girlsWHS basketball‘ junior varsity basketball squad lost to Grand Rapids South Christian 36-35 Thursday evening to close out its regular season with a 13-7 record.

One huge difference in the contest was that the Lady Wildcats had only six attempted free throws while South had 26.

It was a reasonably tight ballgame throughout, with the host Sailors overcoming a 12-9 deficit after the first period to take an 18-16 lead at intermission. They opened up a larger lead, 28-23, and Wayland made a comeback in the fourth quarter, only to fall short by one.
Taryn Coughlin scored 13 points and had six rebounds, Sam Nieuwkoop eight points and five rebounds and Brinley Nieuwenhuis collected five rebounds
“I felt like we played pretty well,” coach Coralie Miller said. “I’ve got good kids that work hard and are selfless, and it was a good effort from them tonight.”
