Lady Wildcat track team falls to 2-1 with loss to TK

The Wayland girls’ varsiCoed-Track-200x112ty track team defeated two opponents Tuesday, but Wednesday ran into a deep and talented Middleville Thornapple Kellogg squad, losing 109-17.

It was the O-K Gold Conference season opener for both teams. TK is one of the heavy favorites this spring to win the league.

There were some bright spots.

Lauryn Spencer took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.86 seconds and she took third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 57.11.

Jenae Mutschler was third in the 200 with a time of 29.26. Maggie Whitney took second in the 3200 with a time of 13:45 and Kaitlyn Paul was with a time of 14:34.

Captain Brooke Mulder had a solid night, winning the discus with a throw of 87’3″ and took third in the shot with a put of 28’0″. McKenna Dutkiewicz took 3rd in the disc with a throw of 80’4″.

“After back-to-back days of track meets, we could use some recovery!” said coach Ray Antel III. “We’ll head to the Comstock Park Invitational on Saturday, looking forward to the nice weather!”

The Wayland boys’ track team split in its first meet of the season Tuesday at Wyoming High School, losing to the host school just 78-71, but getting past Wyoming Kelloggsville.

Highlighting the meet was a particularly outstanding performance by thrower Macarty Carpenter. He won the shot put with an impressive 49-7 this early in the season and took the top spot in the discus with a toss of 130-11. There are reports he has set personal goals of breaking the school record in both events.

Other winners for the Wildcats were:

  • 3200 Relay Team: Perry Carter, Jeremy Pletcher, Landon Merren and Owen Glass, 9:03.19
    • 1600 meter run: Perry Carter, 4:57.37
    • 400 meters: Seth Sevinsky-Popma, 55.26
    • 800 meters: Owen Glass, 2:09.44
    • 3200 meters: Jonathan Zuiderveen, 11:19.27
    • 1600 relay team: Seth Sevinsky-Popma, Alec Zoerman, Perry Carter and Owen Glass.
