The Wayland girls’ varsity cross-country team finished 13th and the boys were 18th at the MSU Spartan Invitational meet Friday at the Forest Akers Golf Course, East Lansing.
The Lady Wildcats had 434 team points in the competition, which included 43 teams. Linden won with 116 points and Benzie Central was runner-up with 120.
The boys’ team had 484 points, only five points away from Detroit Country Day. Benzie Central won with 119 and 41 teams competed.
Freshman Zoe Antel was the Lady Wildcats’ top finisher at No. 58 in 21:50. Sophomore first-year runner Kaitlyn Paul was 81st in 22:12. Freshman Payton Sidebotham moved into the team top five by taking 92nd in 22:21, just a second ahead of senior Mackenzy Kasper. Sophomore Maggir Whitney rounded out the scoring at No. 130 in 22:57.
Senior Perry Carter led the Wildcat boys in the race. He took 26th place with a time of 17:31. Jonathan Zuiderveen was 74th in 18:28. Owen Glass 83rd in 18:35, Derek Huffman 148th in 19:23 and freshman Caleb Pletcher 153rd in 19:30.
