Abby Merice pitched a shutout and homered in the first game of the doubleheader.

The Wayland varsity softball team posted a couple of blowout shutouts Tuesday over East Grand Rapids, 17-0 and 28-0.

The victories lifted the Lady Wildcats’ record in the O-K Gold Conference to 9-1 and 13-5 overall,

Abby Merice pitched the four innings in the opener, allowing one hit and striking out 11 batters.

Leading the Wildcats offensively were:

  • Merice, 3-3 with a home run, double and three RBIs.
    • Ally Longstreet, 3-4 with a double and three RBIs.
    • Kayla Reed, 2-3 with two RBIs.
    • Ava Dutkiewicz. 2-3 with with a double and two RBIs
    • Lauren Chiaramonte, 2-3 with two RBIs.

Lauren McCulligh pitched in the nightcap and allowed one hit while striking out four batters.

On the offensive side of the plate, leading the way were:
• Kayla Reed, 2-2 with a double and three RBIs.
• Lauren McCulligh, 1-2 with two RBIs.
• Chloe Coughlin, 1-2 with an RBI.
• Lauren Chiaramonte, 1-2 with an RBI.
• Maddie Morgrette, 1-2 with a double and two RBIs.

Wayland will compete Friday evening and Saturday in the Ann Arbor Huron Invitational.

The Varsity Softball team beat East Grand Rapids to keep pace at the top of the OK Gold. Abby Merice pitched allowing one hit and striking out 11 batters.
