The Wayland girls’ varsity bowling team Monday afternoon bounced back from last week’s upset loss to GR Catholic Central and crushed Cedar Springs 29-1.
However, the boys’ squad had only four eligible bowlers because of academic issues and lost to the host Redhawks.
The Lady Wildcats took Baker game one, 155-147 and game two with a 175-116 score to take a 10-0 advantage.
Taking match one individual points were Lillian Gates, Haley Taylor, Bella Harnish (195) and Kadence Bottrall (255, nope that isn’t a typo!). Frosh Sarisa Cawley helped contribute to the team combined score, which was 767, 129 pins more than Cedar.
Match two was even more successful as every Lady Wildcat took the point. Lillian Gates, Haley Taylor, Breanna Hyde, Bella Harnish and Kadence Bottrall put the icing on the cake with a 751-624 team score.
“Another ‘W’ for the books!” exclaimed coach Eric Bottrall. “Our ladies will face some good competition Wednesday vs. Thornapple Kellogg at Hastings Bowl (the nostalgic bowling alley).”
Wayland’s team of seven boys could only field four legal bowlers due to eligibility issues. Josie Melinn joined the guys so they didn’t have to take a blind score of zero.
“Education is first and foremost, athletics are a privilege,” remarked coach Sherry Miklusicak. “I could rant on, but this forum isn’t the place for it.”
The Wildcats’ lone point was taken by Alan Beggs, 235-219, including had a nice string of strikes. Wayland met its goal in game one by rolling better than 750 pins, actually recording a score of 778. The ‘Cats hoped for the same thing in game two, but only mustered 699 pins.
Miklusicak added, “One of their bowlers rolled a 300 game last week. Unfortunately, the Wildcats will be short team members again due to the eligibility issues.”
