The Wayland varsity softball team captured yet another Division 2 district championship Saturday afternoon, defeating a highly-touted opponent, Lake Odessa Lakewood, 9-2 in the final round.
The Lady Wildcats, now 25-9 for the season overall and O-K Gold Conference champs for the 13th consecutive season, mercied Allegan 15-1 in four innings in the district semifinals earlier in the day. Lakewood blanked Middleville Thornapple Kellogg 4-0 in its district semifinal contest.
Wayland, winner of eight consecutive district titles and 21 overall, now will move on to the regional tournament Saturday at Hope College, playing Forest Hills Eastern in the semifinals at 11 a.m. Hudsonville Unity Christian and Spring Lake are the other two teams in the competition.
