The Wayland varsity softball team beat South Christian 14-4 and 12-4 in both ends of a doubleheader to clinch a share of the O-K Gold Conference championship.
The Lady Wildcats, 11-8 on the season overall, are 8-0 in league play and can win the title outright Tuesday with at least one victory in a twin bill against Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills.
Wayland played seven innings of error less softball in the nightcap, taking advantage of seven errors by the Sailors and collected 12 hits. Leading the Wildcats offensively were Hunter Fenton (1-for-1 with a double), Cait Bronson (1-1 with 2 RBIs), and Hannah Sikkema (2-3).
The Wildcats stroked 15 hits in the first game and were led by Leigha Morse (4-4 with 2 doubles), Chanlyn Commons (3-4 with a double and a triple), and Sydney Urben (3-4 with a double).
If the Wildcats win at least once Tuesday, it will be their 13th consecutive league championship, though they had to share the crown three years ago, with South Christian, which is the last team to beat Wayland in league play.
Though the Lady Wildcats won the Division 2 state championship for the second time last season, they absorbed a huge number of graduation losses and were thought to be rebuilding. But they were just reloading.
