Lady Wildcats, Clippers score big hardcourt wins

The Wayland girls’ basketball team Friday evening bounced back from a one-point upset loss to Middleville by getting past Northview 53-49.

The verdict solidified the Lady Wildcats’ claim to third place in the O-K Gold Conference standings behind South Christian and Grand Rapids West Catholic. Wayland now is 6-4 in league play.

Junior inside player Addie Sikorski turned in her personal; high-point career performance with 21 points. Senior ace Harmony Laker knocked down 14 points. Sophomore Marissa Ainsworth added 10 points, including the team’s only three throughout the evening.

Wayland now is 12-6 for the season overall.

Northview 73 Wayland boys 39

League leading Northview breezed to a 34-point victory to hike their record overall to 16-4. The Wildcats now are 10-10 overall.

Martin girls 40 Delton 31

The Lady Clippers improved their overall season record to 7-10 with the victory over their neighborhood rivals.

After falling behind 19-17 at the half, they blitzed the nets for 19 points while Delton only managed five in the third quarter.

“Delton played tough in their zone and we had a hard time moving the ball like we wanted in the first half.” Explained coach Ben Schipper. “We made some adjustments at halftime focusing on attacking the gaps and moving without the ball more and had more success in the third quarter.

“We also had great pressure defense in the third quarter that led to a couple easy buckets and a huge momentum shift.”

Marybeth Ritchie was all over the floor in leading Martin offensively with 12 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots. Kayden Jager played a good game with 10 points, hitting a couple big threes and knocking down two clutch free throws down the stretch.

Torryn Harris sparked the defensive campaign with five steals.

Avery Jager added 8 rebounds and Anna Jager had 7 points and 7 rebounds.

Delton 50 Martin boys 37

The Clippers fell to 5-14 for the overall season and 1-8 in the Southwest Athletic Conference with the loss. Delton now is 12-7 overall and 6-3 in the league.

Belding 47 Hopkins girls 35

The Lady Vikings’ six-game winning streak came to an end Friday evening. Belding, all alone in the second place in the O-K Silver Conference, improved to 8-2 in league play while Hopkins fell to 9-8 overall.

Belding 54 Hopkins boys 36

The Vikings fell to 3-8 in the O-K Silver Conference and 5-14 overall with the loss. Belding is 11-9 overall and 6-6 in league play.
