The Wayland girls’ varsity bowling team keeps rolling along with its 14-0 overall record, but the boys had a rough night Wednesday as hosts to O-K Gold/Green rival Hudsonville Unity Christian.

The Lady ‘Cats had an outstanding night with a big win of 23-7, but the boys lost 25-5.
The Lady Wildcats are closing in on another league championship and have only one more month of bowling to go.

Bakers proved to be a slow start at 183+139=322 for the girls that gave Unity a 6-4, but they won all but one point in individuals to top off the night.
Scores from individuals were not high for a team like Wayland, but it was enough to prevail:

  • Marissa Bruinsslot with 200+187=387
  • Mackenzie Banas 187+174=361
  • Sydney Urben 169+165=334
  • Amber Beggs with 139+132=271
  • Jessica Henderson with a 138 and Makayla Konecny with 138.

Co-Captain Bruinsslot reported, “The ladies were not too enthusiastic tonight as the scores proved to be pretty low. In spite of lanes in rough condition, the ladies have almost guaranteed a conference title by not losing one single match with only a few matches left in the season.”

Boys’ coach Sherry Miklusicak lamented, “It was a rough night on the lanes as most of the teams were well below average. I can honestly say neither team really ‘won’ tonight.”

The Wildcats lost the first Baker game by only one pin 154-153, and that game is worth four points. They lost game two by only six pins, so there goes another 4 points, plus 2 for total. A difference of seven pins meant they were losing 10-0.

Game one had some nice scores as Wayland totaled 884, but lost by 18 pins.
Joe Laidler rolled a 180, which is a good game and will usually win a point.
Bryan Franck took his point with a 181 game.
Dylan Roberts took his point with a nice 206 game.
Dillon Smith anchored his point with a 191 game.
“Unfortunately, we had lost at this point with one more game to go,” Miklusicak said.

In game two, Christian Courser took his point with 186 game and Dylan Roberts had 204 (he averaged 205 for the evening). Game two was lost by only 14 pins.

The Wayland boys now are 5-9 on the season overall in dual matches.

“It takes a TEAM to put together a winning season,” the coach commented. “One, two, or three people do not make the team so everyone has an important contribution to make. We have had some setbacks from the start of this season and it is important that we realize the importance of not letting our team down.”
