Middleville Thornapple Kellogg apparently had a game plan to stop high scoring Wayland junior forward Harmony Laker.

The Trojans succeeded in holding Laker to just four points, but her teammates stepped up to take charge of a 50-39 triumph in an O-K Gold Conference contest Friday evening.

Middleville, usually a door mat in league play, entered Friday night’s ballgame with an overall record of 8-2, with its only losses coming at the hands of league leaders Grand Rapids Catholic Central and South Christian.

Laker in the last couple of weeks had been scorching the nets, twice for more than 30 points, but the Trojans limited her to just a couple of field goals.

No matter. Her teammates stepped in to carry the offensive load.

Freshman guard Marissa Ainsworth led the Wildcats with 15 points, including a couple of three-point field goals. Reese Coughlin and Laney Wolf both contributed nine points, all of Wolf’s on threes. Izzy Johnson chipped in a couple of threes and had seven points.

The win improved Wayland’s O-K Gold record to 4-1, with its only loss in the league coming on a 61-60 verdict against Cedar Springs. Grand Rapids Catholic Central leads the Gold with a 5-0 mark.

Wayland’s overall record is 7-5.

The Wayland boys’ squad dropped a 66-41 decision to Thornapple Kellogg and saw its overall record slip to 2-10.
