The Wayland softball team captured first place in the Lakeshore Grand Slam tournament Saturday and earned some revenge in the process.

The Lady Wildcats won all four contests to improve their overall season record to 6-0 and they defeated defending champion Spring Lake, a team they lost to in the finals last year.

Wayland was ranked No. 8 in the first state-wide poll of the season and should move up. Spring Lake was an honorable mention selection.

The Lady Wildcats defeated Spring Lake 9-4 in the tournament finals. Abby Merice picked up her third pitching win of the day, allowing six hits and walking two while striking out five.

Leading the Wildcats offensively were: Hunter Fenton – 1-1; Leigha Morse – 3-4 with a double and RBI, and Sydney Urben – 2-3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs.

Wayland defeated Whitehall 12-2, Allendale 11-1 and Coopersville 11-2 earlier in the tourney. (Photo supplied)
