Though the Wayland boys had dreadful luck in the roll of the dice for the upcoming district basketball tournament, the Lady Wildcats didn’t fare so badly and stand a fair chance of making the finals.
The Wayland girls will play at 5 p.m. next Wednesday against Grand River Prep (3-9) in the semifinals at Wyoming Godwin Heights. If they win that encounter, they’ll take on South Christian (17-1), Kelloggsville (2-12)or Godwin (9-6) in the finals at 7 p.m. Friday, March 4. The bad news is that South Christian, one of the top five teams in the state Class B rankings, already has beaten the Lady Wildcats twice.
For those who didn’t already know, the Wayland boys, 16-1 and ranked No. 3 in the latest Associated Press Class B poll, will have to meet No. 2 ranked Godwin (15-2) in the district opener Monday evening, March 7, at South Christian.
The winner moves on to Wednesday’s semifinal against South Christian, which is 6-11 for the season.
The finals will be against Grand River Prep (11-5), West Michigan Aviation Academy (7-8) or Kelloggsville (3-13).
Hopkins
The Vikings boys will be hosts for their district tournament and despite owning a 3-15 overall record, they have a decent shot at making the finals. They’ll play Plainwell (5-12) at 5 p.m. Monday, March 7. Otsego (2-15) will play Fennville (13-3) later that evening.
If Hopkins wins in the opening round, it will take on winless Allegan (0-17) in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 9. South Haven (15-2) will play the winner of the Otsego-Fennville game in the semis later that night.
The finals will be at 7 p.m. Friday, March 11.
The Lady Vikings did reasonably well in the district draw for the tourney at Allegan. They will play either Plainwell (3-16) or Allegan (8-11) in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 2. If they can win that contest, they will be in the finals against South Haven (7-10), Fennville (2-12) or Otsego (16-3) at 7 p.m. Friday, March 4.
Martin
The district host Clipper boys’ team, like Wayland, didn’t have a lot of luck on the draw for the first round. They will take on Climax-Scotts (12-6) at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 7. The winner will move on to the semifinals against Kalamazoo Phoenix (6-5).
Kalamazoo Lakeside (1-2) and Kalamazoo Heritage Christian (13-3) are in the other bracket.
The finals will be at 7 p.m. Friday, March 11, at Martin’s gym.
The Clipper girls got a strange draw, bypassing the opening round and semifinals to play Climax-Scotts (17-2) in the finals at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at Martin. The Clipper girls were listed as having a 12-6 overall record.
