The Wayland girls’Girls-Soccer soccer team lost a 2-1 squeaker Wednesday to O-K Gold Conference rival Middleville Thornapple Kellogg on a cold, windy and snowy evening.

The girls battled to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation and conceded the go-ahead goal late in the second overtime to fall on the road to the Trojans.

After a very even, back-and-forth first half, the Lady Wildcats found themselves chasing a goal after a hand ball in the box resulted in a penalty kick for TK. The second half saw more end-to-end soccer, with both teams making serious scoring threats.

Wayland finally tied the game with just three minutes left as junior Ali Cutler found the back of the net for her ninth goal of the season.

The score would remain tied and the teams would go on to play two 10-minute overtimes. The score remained knotted after the first extra session, “but the second overtime saw TK apply lots of pressure and force senior goalie Hannah Anderson to make some big saves,” said coach Ben Sleeman. “Unfortunately, a bad bounce found a wide open Trojan in the penalty box and she scored the ultimate game winning goal for the home side.”

Anderson finished with 10 saves for the contest. Wayland recorded 13 shots on goal and Middleville had 18.

Wayland falls to 4-4-1 overall and 1-2 in the conference after the loss. The Lady Wildcats will be back in action at home Monday evening against Catholic Central.
