A rainy Monday night left the Lady Wildcats drenched and defeated, as they lost 3-1 in a road soccer match to East Grand Rapids.

After taking a quick lead on a Kennedy Thelen goal, Wayland maintained dominance over much of the half but conceded a late equalizer with just five minutes remaining in the half.

Coach Ben Sleeman said in the second half, it was the Pioneers who struck first when they capitalized on a failed clearance by the Wildcat defense and found the back of the net to take the lead. Not long after that, a long ball to the back post and a headed goal gave them the final goal of the match.

Despite the Wildcats’ best efforts, chance after chance was turned away by an outstanding effort by the Pioneer keeper, Sleeman added.

The loss brings the Wildcats’ overall record to 6-7-2 (3-6-1 in the O-K Gold)

The girls will wrap up their regular season Wednesday evening at home when they play host to conference foe Grand Rapids Christian.
