The Wayland girls’ basketball team Friday evening dropped a 57-38 game on Grand Rapids West Catholic’s floor that at least one observer insisted was winnable.
The Wildcats trailed the 5-1 host by only three points into the fourth period when the Falcons suddenly nailed three consecutive threes to go up by a dozen points. Wayland’s efforts afterward somehow collapsed.
Senior ace Harmony Laker scored 12 points, including a three, but the only other Wayland threes for the ballgame were one each for Izzy Johnson and Lauren. Addie Sikorsky and both tallied seven points.
The Lady Wildcats now are 5-3 and they will be back in action Friday night at Grand Rapids Union.
The Wayland boys’ team had a big night at West Catholic, however, pinning a 49-45 defeat on the host Falcons, who sported a 5-2 record coming into the contest. The Wildcat guys now are 5-3 as well.
