The Wayland girls’ varsity basketball team not only lost a game Friday night, 65-48 to Grand Rapids Catholic Central. It also lost a chance to share the O-K Gold Conference championship with the Cougars.

Catholic Central, with the win, improved to 13-1 in league play while the Lady Wildcats slipped to 10-3. Now, about the best they can do is second place over a Cedar Springs team they have a date with next week in a makeup.

Too many Wildcats got into foul trouble in the early going and they fell behind and weren’t able to make up the deficit.

Junior ace forward Harmony Laker had yet another strong individual performance with 22 points, including four three-point field goals. However, sophomore pivot Addy Sikorsky was the only other Wayland player to score in double figures, with 11.

Ava Makowski and Marissa Ainsworth each added a three.

The loss dropped the Wildcats’ overall record to 14-7.

The Wildcat boys’ squad lost 73-34 to GR Catholic Central to finish the regular season with an overall record of 3-19. They will play Hamilton at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hastings in the opening round of the Division 2 district tournament.
