The Wayland girls’ cross-country team finished eighth as a team Friday among 35 girls’ teams in the Michigan State Spartan Invitational at the Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing.

Senior Maggie Whitney and sophomore Rylee Cronkright both earned medals by capturing 16th and 23rd place, respectively.

The Wildcat boys finished the day in 39th place.

Sophomore McKenna Vean of Plainwell was individual medalist, crossing the finish line in 18:53.9. Whitney finished in 20:30.4 and Cronkright in 20:39.2. Mie Tornbjerg was 56th, freshman Naomi Oosterhouse 77th and Zoe Antel 141st.

A total of 256 girls took part in the race.

Benzie Central won the team competition with 118 points, Allendale was second and Wayland finished with 308 points.

Ethan Killips led the Wayland boys with a time of 20:11.7, followed by Julian Leon, Ian Russell, Elijah Gamelin and Gabe Attruia, in that order.

The Wildcats girls and boys will open O-K Gold Conference action this week with the first jamboree Wednesday.
