Lady Wildcats roll past quality Unity Christian team

The Wayland girls’ varsity bowling team improved its overall season record Monday to 14-2-1 with a 19-11 victory over O-K Gold/Green Conference rival Hudsonville Unity Christian.

“Unity Christian is a much improved team, as we faced them again this year,” said coach Sherry Miklusicak. “This is a team that had beaten Zeeland on their home lanes.”

Unity Christian faces Zeeland at home Wednesday and the Lady Cats have a vested interest in the winner. The Wildcats have lost to Zeeland twice and have beaten Unity twice.

“This will make for an interesting O-K Conference tournament to determine league champions!” the coach added.

The boys’ team Monday lost to Unity by a 27-3 count.

Wayland girls Monday afternoon jumped out to a quick 10-0 after claiming both Baker games with scores of 163-154 and 179-149.

In the first set of individual games, the Lady Wildcats had high games by Erin Porteous 192, Alicia Sweeney 192, and Sydney Urben 213. Taking six points out of nine, they found themselves ahead by a score of 16-3, which sealed the victory.

“The pressure was off in the second set, but I don’t know if the girls were aware of their guaranteed win at this point or not,” Miklusicak said. “It is a good thing it wasn’t a tight match at this point as we only took one point in this match out of the nine (we took grand total for two more points). Leading this game was Marissa Bruinsslot with a 206, Alicia Sweeney 170, and Sydney Urben 195.

In the boys’ rolloff, Unity jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead and claimed both Baker games with scores of 198-155 and 210-116.

In the first set of individual matches, the Wildcats lost 751-955.

“As a coach, I am a bit weary of other coaches stating, ‘Man, we haven’t bowled like this all year!’ (insert: Wildcat growl),” Miklusicak said. “When another team is bowling well, all you can do is congratulate them! We were almost 100 pins better than the first time we faced them this year!”

The Wildcats’ second set of matches improved even more, but so did Unity. Wayland lost 956-843. Landon Vos of Unity tore up the Lanes with scores of 235 and 279, almost bowling a 300 game.
