The Wayland girls’ soccer team evened its season record at 1-1 Tuesday with a 3-0 shutout over Grand Rapids Christian.

Coach Ben Sleeman said the game started slowly, with the Eagles controlling much of the possession but the Wildcat defense stayed strong and kept the Eagles off the board.

Brinley Nieuwenhuis opened the scoring for the Wildcats when she calmly slotted a pass from McKenna Bruin into the back of the net to make the score at 1-0 going into halftime.

The second half saw the Wildcats apply more pressure offensively and sophomore Amanda Brown netted goals twice to seal the victory.

Rachel Wienclaw came up with 10 saves while facing 10 shots and posted her first clean sheet of the season.

The win brings the Lady Wildcats’ record to 1-1 on the season (1-0 O-K Gold). They travel to Thornapple Kellogg on Thursday night for a massive conference matchup against local rivals, and last season’s conference champs. Kickoff is at 6:45 p.m.
