The Wayland girls’ varsity softball team will play Hamilton at 4:30 p.m. Monday afternoon in the finals of the Division 2 district tournament at Hopkins.
The contest, originally scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, had to be postponed because of relentless rain showers eventually making the field conditions too wet.
The Lady Wildcats won their district semifinal contest by shutting out Middleville Thornapple Kellogg 1-0 and Hamilton defeated Allegan 18-3 in the other semifinal before the postponement announcement was made.
Wayland will take a 30-2 overall record into the finals and it remains the No. 1-ranked Class B team in the state after the conclusion of the regular season.
However, if Wayland can get the best of the Hawkeyes, it will still have interesting challenges awaiting in the regionals Saturday, June 6, at Hope College. The Wildcats would face a very good Spring Lake squad in the regional opener at 11 a.m. The Lakers whipped Allendale 11-4 to take their district and boast of a 23-3 overall record.
If they pass that test, they very well may have another showdown at 4 p.m. with Zeeland West, which edged them 1-0 in the Whitehall tournament April 18. It was one of only two losses Wayland has absorbed all season.
The Dux Saturday won their first district championship ever and they are sporting a 30-5 record, led by senior pitcher Morgan Engelsman, who outdueled all-state Wayland hurler Mallory Teunissen.
