Wayland dropped its home soccer opener 3-0 Monday night against perennial O-K Gold Conference power South Christian.

“The game was even for most of the first half, but it was the Sailors who were able to break the deadlock and score on a set piece,” reported coach Ben Sleeman. “The Wildcats ratcheted up the pressure following the goal, testing the Sailor keeper twice in quick succession but were unlucky not to have found the back of the net and went into halftime trailing by a goal.”

The second half remained even until the Sailors were able to once again break through and find their second goal of the game, quickly followed by their third to put the game out of reach.

Keeper Rachel Wienclaw made seven saves facing 10 shots in the loss.

The loss brings Wayland’s record to 1-3 (1-2 in the O-K Gold). The girls are back in action at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening as they host Zeeland West in a nonleague match.
