It was Karli Warninga fun night for the Wayland girls’ varsity basketball team in a 67-28 blowout at Hastings Tuesday.

Coach Marty Howard’s Wildcats, ranked No. 3 this week in the state-wide Associated Press Class B poll, were just coming off an emotional and exhausting 77-76 victory in double overtime over Grand Rapids Catholic Central, and some might speculate if they might have a bit of a letdown.

Not to worry.

Wayland took command of the contest in the first quarter with a 14-4 lead and was up 26-15 at the half. The rest of the way was peppered with Howard tinkering with the offense to let a lot of “other girls’ play.

Junior guard Karli Warning took advantage of the opportunity by coming up with her first double figures night in scoring with 10 points, her varsity career high.

Of course, the scoring parade was led by senior point guard Presley Hudson, who had 15 points. Junior forward Hope Dollarhide netted a varsity career-high 13 points, Ali Cutler had nine, Sydney Ritz and Morgan Winger seven apiece and Ali Martus five, as just about everybody came to the party.

The 40-point victory, the second most lopsided verdict of the season, left the ‘Cats with a 12-0 overall record, 4-0 in the O-K Gold Conference.

But the Wildcats will have to spend the rest of the week preparing to face South Christian and junior point guard Jenn DeBoer. Game time will be at 7:30.
