The Wayland softball team Thursday swept a doubleheader against non-league opponent Ravenna, 3-2 and 7-1.
A walk-off double by Reese Veltman made the difference in the opener after the two teams battled to a draw right up until the final inning. Her timely hit brought home Hannah Rairigh with the game winner.
Third sacker Harmony Laker drilled three hits, as did second sacker Izzy Johnson to lead the offensive effort, which featured 10 Wayland hits.
Sophomore hurler Madi Ludema yielded only five hits, walked none and struck out three in seven innings of work.
In the nightcap, Laker pitched the full seven innings on the mound, scattering 10 hits, walking none and fanning four. She was pressed into service because the customary second pitcher, senior Carli Miklusicak, suffered a shoulder injury.
Laker, however, had been one of the Wildcats ace pitchers a year ago.
Rairigh, Kailey Lown, Ludema and Veltman each contributed a double to the offensive attack. Rairigh and Laker both had two hits.
The Lady Wildcats now are 8-4 overall and will take on Niles Saturday in the opening round of a tournament Saturday morning at Holland.
