The Wayland varsity softball team swept a doubleheader against Forest Hills Eastern Tuesday, winning 25-0 in the first game and taking the nightcap 24-3.

The victories improved the Lady Wildcats’ record to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in O-K Gold Conference play.

Southpaw Abby Merice pitched in the opener and only allowed one hit while striking out 6 of the 11 batters she faced over three innings.

Leading the Wildcats offensively were Merice 2-for-2 with two triples and two RBIs; Chloe Coughlin, 3-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs, and Ava Dutkiewicz, 3-3 with six RBIs.

Lauren McCulligh picked up the win in the circle in the nightcap, throwing three innings.

Leading the Wildcats offensively were Merice, 3-4 with a triple, double and three RBIs; Lauren Chiaramonte, 2-3 with three RBIs; Ally Longstreet, 2-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Ava Dutkiewicz 2-3 with a double and four RBIs.

The sweep also avenged Wayland’s only loss, to the Hawks, in league play last season. The Lady Wildcats have lost this year only to Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.
