The Wayland girls’ varsity cross-country team checked in fourth among nine teams Saturday at the Harriers for Hope Invitational at the Peacock Tree Farm, Laingsburg.

The Lady Wildcats picked up 101 team points and were only seven points away from second place. Lansing Christian won with 72, Grand Rapids West Michigan Aviation and Capital Homeschool tied for the runner-up slot with 94 apiece.

The Wayland boys’ squad, however, finished eighth among nine squads.

Freshman Ava Makowski continued to impress by taking the fourth individual place in 20:07.52, closing in on the coveted 20-minute milestone over a five-kilometer course.

Sophomore teammate Olivia Barabas was eighth in 20:36.55. Rounding out the scoring were Hannah Smith 20th, freshman Elliot Antel 31st and Faith Rollandini 47th.

Sophomore Travis Koon again paced the Wildcat boys, placing 10th with a time of 17:38.94. Freshman Henry Oudbier was 42nd in 19:18.31, freshman Casey Jansen 48th in 19:50.98, Jared Jandernoa 52nd and freshman Carter VanWyk 60th.

Hanover-Horton dominated the boys’ competition with 51 points, capturing the first three places.
